Rule changes for 2008

The following rule changes will take effect in 2008.
  • We will use the RCGA handicap system provided by Island Springs. Thanks John Gibbs. With stroke control, this should bring everyone's handicap down slightly and have the same effect as raising the maximum handicap.
  • The League fee will be based on a team next year, as it has been.
  • The playoff format adopted this year will be used from now on. First half champion plays second half champion. If one team wins both halves, it will play the second place overall team.
  • If a team defaults totally three weeks in a row without providing notification to the league President, that team will be expelled from the league. individual players may join another team.
  • You must mark your ball so that you can identify it. A unique mark should be placed on the ball with an indelible marker.
  • Stones in bunkers only are declared as movable obstructions. Rule 24-1 applies.
24-1 Movable Obstruction

A player may take relief without penalty from a movable obstruction as follows:

(a) If the ball does not lie in or on the obstruction, the obstruction may be removed. If the ball moves, it must be replaced, and there is no penalty provided that the movement of the ball is directly attributable to the removal of the obstruction. Otherwise, Rule 18-2a applies.

(b) If the ball lies in or on the obstruction, the ball may be lifted and the obstruction removed. The ball must through the green or in a hazard be dropped, or on the putting green be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball lay in or on the obstruction, but not nearer the hole. The ball may be cleaned when lifted under this Rule.

When a ball is in motion, an obstruction that might influence the movement of the ball, other than an attended flagstick or equipment of the players, must not be removed.

(Exerting influence on ball — see Rule 1-2.)

Note: If a ball to be dropped or placed under this Rule is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted.

  • Gimmes are still not allowed. All players must hole out on every hole.

League Championship

In a tight match finished in near total darkness Longshots defeated MS Computers 28-26 on strokes.

Congratulations to Longshots team members.

In the scramble Mitch Gajda sunk a 15 footer on #7 to win the longest putt for Soo Mill and D'Arcy Keating for Get A Grip chipped a drive to within 4 feet for closest to the hole in three on #2.

The skins went to ANCU (birdie on #1), Get A Grip (birdie on #4), NAPA (birdie on #6) and Team Ward (eagle on #8).

Thanks for a great year. See you on the first Thursday in May next year.

We have a serious problem.

Here is the situation....

I finished and posted the statistics rather quickly on the weekend and then made a trip to Toronto and hadn't taken time to properly review and check the statistics.

I received a phone call last night from a league member asking me to review the Week 18 Results, as there appeared to be an inconsistency in the team score of the match between Team Ward and Garden River Truss Co.. Upon cursory examination, there was a potential problem with the team score in that the wrong team had been assigned the 10 points for team net strokes.

When I reviewed the Week 18 Results, the Team Scorecard - as submitted last week, and the actual scorecards, I found that Team Ward had incorrectly been rewarded the 10 points for low team net when Garden River Truss Co. actually had the lower net score. I can't explain how this got by Duncan and I last week, but it does have a significant impact.

Based on the updated results - and I did update and post all the revised statistics - the overall second place team is now Longshots.

We will have to have a brief team captain meeting at 5:00 PM to make sure everyone understands with what has happened.

I want to express my deepest apologies for making this most grievous mistake.

FedEx Cup Points and THE TOUR Championship

Someone asked me about the Cup system last Thursday. Here is what you need to know before Thursday's first round begins.
  • The top 30 players in play-off FedEx Cup points qualify for THE TOUR Championship.
  • Only the top 5 have a mathematical chance to win the cup. They are:
  1. Tiger Woods 112,733 pts
  2. Steve Stricker -3133
  3. Phil Mickelson -4120
  4. Rory Sabbatini -9145
  5. K.J. Choi -9633
  • If Tiger decides to stay home, he finishes at worst 6th.
  • If Tiger plays, he finishes at worst 5th.
  • Stricker must finish in the top 3 to have a chance to win if Tiger finishes out of the top 10.
  • Mickelson must finish in the top 2 and Tiger must finish worse than 5th.
  • Sabbatini and Choi must both win and hope Tiger finishes worse than 10th.
